QS: Quality Assurance from Farm to Shop

QS is a quality assurance scheme for foodstuffs, that takes into account all steps in the entire food supply chain. Because of its holistic approach, the QS certification mark increases food safety and inspires trust.

The QS logo has rapidly established itself as a sign of safety and reliability, and consumers can now find it on a wide range of products, including beef, pork, and poultry, as well as fruit, vegetables, and potatoes.

Foodstuffs only bear the QS certification mark if all parties in the entire chain of production and distribution comply with the QS requirements. This includes the quality of the animal feed, the processing of meat, fruit, and vegetables, and the retail and sale of the final product.

DQS CFS is an approved certification body for the supply chains of meat and meat products, as well as for fruit, vegetables, and potatoes.

Benefits:

  • Increases consumer trust
  • Increased safety and hygiene across the supply chain
  • Full traceability of products
  • Efficient identification and control of possible risks

Certification Process:

What is specific to a QS assessment is that any non-conformities will be separated into three categories, which then specify the assessment intervals. After the assessment, the organization receives action plans with the non-conformities, if any. DQS decides on the success of the certification. The organization receives a report and its certificate and needs to work through the non-conformities within a specified period of time.

Synergies can be realized when assessing an integrated management system according to various standards at the same time.

FAMI QS – Feed Additives and Premixtures

FAMI-QS is designed for organizations that manufacture feed additives and/or supply individual components to the feed industry.

FAMI-QS is the feed additive and premixture manufacturers’ reaction to the European Regulation (EC) 183/2005 on feed hygiene. The standard represents a European system for Good Manufacturing Practice in feed safety. Its application is designed to guarantee safety and good hygienic conditions throughout the entire food production chain, to include all components. The assessment provides manufacturers of feed components and suppliers from third world countries with an opportunity to demonstrate the safety of their processes and their conformity with the requirements of FAMI-QS.

Benefits for your organization:

  • Fulfillment of the requirements of FAMI-QS and safeguarding of corresponding markets
  • Improved confidence of customers and retailers in the organization’s ability to perform
  • Integration of state-of-the-art procedures in respect of hazard analysis, risk appraisal, and preventive strategies into the existing management system

Food Safety System Certification 22000

Food Safety System Certification 22000 (FSSC 22000) is a robust, ISO-based, internationally accepted certification scheme for auditing and certification of food safety in the whole supply chain. FSSC 22000 uses the existing standards ISO 22000, ISO 22003 and technical specifications for sector PRPs, which were developed through a wide and open consultation with a large number of related organizations. ISO 22000 certified manufacturers can obtain full GFSI accepted FSSC 22000 certification by meeting the requirements of technical specifications for sector PRPs and the additional scheme requirements.

Overview of FSSC 22000 framework

The standard consists of three components: ISO 22000, PRPs and the additional FSSC 22000 requirements. The international standard ISO 22000 forms the basis for FSSC 22000 and outlines the requirements for management, for internal and external communication and points out the continuous improvement approach. This is the reason why the revision of ISO 22000 has such a big impact on FSSC 22000. The sector specific PRPs (Pre-Requisite-Program) makes sure that FSSC 22000 is applicable for (nearly) all companies in the supply chain. The additional FSSC 22000 requirements ensure consistency and integrity and regularize the administration and management of FSSC 22000.

Moreover, there is an optional quality management module, which includes all the integrable elements of ISO 9001 into the FSSC 22000 certification. This way it is possible to combine a Food Safety Management Certification with a Quality Management Certification.

FSSC 22000 is applicable for the following branches: food manufacturing, food packaging manufacturing, animal feed production, farming and newly also transport and storage, catering and retail and wholesale. GFSI benchmark is valid for food manufacturing (C), animal feed production (D), transport and storage (G), food packaging manufacturing (I) and bio chemicals (K).

Benefits for you organisation
  • ISO-based supply chain approach
  • GFSI accepted
  • Use of existing, independent, international standards
  • ISO 22000, ISO 22003 and technical specifications for sector PRPs
  • ISO/IEC 17021 accreditation (system & process approach)
  • Wide scope: food manufacturing (slaughtering and pet food included)
  • Stakeholder approval & commitment (industry, retailers, NGOs)
  • In-depth and rigorous food safety audits
  • Independent scheme management
  • Transparency
Changes in FSSC Version 5

In the new version 5 there is an optional quality management module, which includes all the integrable elements of ISO 9001 into the FSSC 22000 certification. This way it is possible to combine a Food Safety Management Certification with a Quality Management Certification.
FSSC 22000 is applicable for the following branches: food manufacturing, food packaging manufacturing, animal feed production, farming as well as transport and storage, catering and retail and wholesale. GFSI benchmark is valid for food manufacturing (C), animal feed production (D), transport and storage (G), food packaging manufacturing (I) and biochemicals (K). Read more

Timeline

On June 3, FSSC 22000 published Version 5 of its certification scheme. One big reason for the revision is the publication of the standard ISO 22000: 2018 last summer, which is used as a basis for the GFSI benchmarked certification scheme. The new version includes mainly structural changes.

Audits against the FSSC 22000 Scheme requirements V4.1 are only allowed until December 31st of 2019. Upgrade audits against FSSC 22000 Scheme requirements V5 shall be conducted between 1st January 2020 and 31st December 2020. Under extraordinary circumstances, the V5 upgrade audit can be postponed to 2021, but this process shall be completed in accordance with the FSSC scheme requirements and before June 29. After that date, V4.1 certificates will expire and the organization will need to start over with the certification process as per ISO 17021 to re-gain certification.

Good Trading Practice: Safe Food & Feed Supply

The GTP Code is a food and feed safety assurance scheme owned by COCERAL, the European association representing the cereals, rice, feedstuffs, oilseeds, olive oil, oils and fats and agro-supply trade. The scheme developed by traders for traders, covers collection, storage, trading and transport of cereals, protein crops, oilseeds, and other plant products and their by-products.

The GTP aims at helping food and feed business operators in:

  • Complying with good hygiene practices relating to operating sites, premises, equipment, transport, waste and staff.
  • Identifying and controlling potential risks for consumers’ safety and establishing appropriate procedures based on the principles of the HACCP system.

After a successful certification audit, companies get GTP certification for a period of three years, provided that audits are performed annually. DQS CFS offers the GTP certification scheme through a cooperation with a trusted partner.

Benefits:

The GTP certification provides the means to your company to be consistent with legal requirements in relation to food and feed safety as well as the requirements of customers of the food and feed chain.

Obtaining the GTP certification guarantees the assurance that good practices to manage risks are in place in your company. The GTP certificate will provide you with extra business opportunities with GTP companies and other scheme participants worldwide regarded as equivalent by COCERAL, as per Appendix 6 of the GTP
